Carson-Newman provides an alternate pathway to licensure for those seeking to teach in high-need areas (e.g., math, foreign language, special education, ESL, science). The Education Department at Carson-Newman University is fully accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Each initial licensure area was part of the most recent joint review conducted by CAEP and the Tennessee Department of Education. Carson-Newman is an approved Education Preparation Program (EPP) by the Tennessee Department of Education in 35 licensure areas.
For admission to the MEd Job-embedded Practitioner Licensure Program, individuals must show proof of employment at a school system within a 50-mile radius of Carson-Newman University’s main campus (Jefferson City, TN) or the Nashville Education Center (Mt Juliet, TN) and must meet admission requirements for the program. Carson-Newman makes a recommendation to the Tennessee Department of Education for an appointment to the Practitioner License, which is valid for three years, while the practitioner completes coursework and any other licensure requirements at Carson-Newman.
This license is available to individuals who have not completed traditional teacher education programs, but meet content knowledge requirements in one of two ways:
36 credit hours
18-36 months
Combination of online classes and on-site classes
A graduate degree is an investment in your future, and we want to equip you to succeed.
Our no interest payment plans help reduce up-front costs. Enrolling in a payment plan allows you to make monthly payments on your direct charges instead of paying your full balance before classes start.
Our Office of Financial Aid is available to guide you through the many options available to graduate students at Carson-Newman.
Job-Embedded is Tennessee’s alternate pathway to licensure, which provides an opportunity for a school district to hire a qualified individual as the teacher-of-record. A Job-Embedded practitioner’s license is valid for 3 years while completing an Educator Prep Program.
Any public or qualified non-public school within a 50-mile radius of Carson-Newman’s main campus in Jefferson City, TN or our Nashville Education Center in Mt. Juliet, TN.
No, while the vast majority of this program can be completed online, there are three (3) required courses which include some in-person meetings in the evenings.
All in-person meetings are coordinated with your teaching schedule in mind. Our students consistently say that these courses with in-person meetings are some of the most helpful and meaningful courses of our job-embedded program.
There are 10 courses for credit and two (2) zero-credit hour courses required to complete the licensure (30 hours total). The two (2) zero-credit courses are the mentoring that the job-embedded teacher will receive for the first full year of teaching. Three (3) of the 10 courses for credit are offered on the main campus at C-N, at the C-N Knoxville Education Center when applicable, or at the C-N Nashville Education Center, and are taken the first semester, the next fall, and the following spring. These courses meet once per week in the evenings. The remaining seven (7) courses for licensure are online courses. All students are encouraged to take two (2) additional courses (6 hours) to complete the Masters of Education degree (36 total hours).
In addition to coursework, some licensure areas will require specific testing in accordance with state licensure requirements.
Please contact the Director of the Job-Embedded program, Dr. Ronda Blevins (rblevins@cn.edu), for more information or to see if you qualify.
