Campus enhancements await returning Carson-Newman students

(August, 13, 2014)– While Carson-Newman University students enjoyed a break this summer, more than 35 campus renovations will have been completed – just in time for fall classes.

“We are indeed proud to be making so many large-scale renovations and updates this summer to some of our University buildings and grounds,” said University President Randall O’Brien. “Projects have been planned with our students in mind.”

A large focus of the campus renovations has been the transition of the Stephens Burnett Library from a traditional library to a Learning Commons.

The library renovations mean more study area on the two main floors, with designated study rooms, additional computers, large monitor stations and movable furniture.

It will also house the new Student Success in the Learning Commons, formerly known as Life Directions.

“Recent studies show for most students to be successful they need to be engaged and connected,” said Executive Vice President and Provost Kina Mallard. “Student Success in the Learning Commons at Carson-Newman provides students with points of connection. They become connected with college life as they choose their majors, learn study skills strategies, financial and time management skills, explore career services and participate in peer tutoring.”

Carson-Newman also welcomes Chick-fil-A to campus, which joins a new Provisions On Demand convenience store, both in the Maddox Student Activity Center.

Director of Physical Plant and Construction Manager Ondes Webster estimates that well over two thirds of campus has had renovation work or new construction this summer.

Projects include a landscaped outside patio at Maples Library Café, new windows in Warren Art Building, new roof and renovated locker rooms in Tarr Music Center, and renovations to the 80-year-old building that houses the Appalachian Center and to historic Swann Residence Hall. Much of the work is credited to donors and volunteer groups such as Women of Vision and Baptist Builders

Carson-Newman athletic sites have seen such upgrades as new turf in Burke-Tarr Stadium, the addition of a new Jason S. Edwards Fieldhouse for soccer teams, and a field house expansion and turf enhancements for the University’s softball program.

“These renovations – from the new Learning Commons at the Library, the art building and updates in the science building – are all in keeping with our Students First commitment at Carson-Newman,” said O’Brien. “We know students are going to like what they see when they return this semester.”
