The Special Education (Non-Licensure) program is designed for students interested in working with individuals with disabilities in educational and community settings outside of licensed teaching roles. The program is well-suited for paraprofessionals and others seeking flexible pathways to expand their knowledge and career opportunities. Students may also pursue graduate study leading to teacher licensure, including Carson-Newman’s Job-Embedded Practitioner (JEP) programs, or prepare for graduate programs in fields such as speech-language pathology and occupational therapy.
Special Education (Non-Licensure) is a program without teacher licensure. Since the program has built-in flexibility, coursework can be hand-tailored to help individuals reach their professional goals.

The Special Education (Non-Licensure) program prepares students to work with individuals with disabilities in a variety of educational and community settings. The degree also provides a strong foundation for graduate study in fields such as speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, counseling, and other behavioral or helping professions. In addition, the program opens pathways to graduate-level teacher licensure programs, including Carson-Newman’s Job-Embedded Practitioner (JEP) programs.
The Special Education degree program truly widened my view on the education system and the best ways to serve students that are differently-abled. My professors were willing to go above and beyond to make sure that I was prepared to continue and obtain my master’s degree. I am able to have a different viewpoint and see my clients from multiple perspectives due to my Special Education degree.
Students in the non-licensure Special Education program take many of the same courses as students in the licensure programs and have opportunities to complete practicum experiences in schools or through virtual online experiences, gaining firsthand experience working with individuals with disabilities.
