Sherbie Hampson

Adjunct Professor of Flute

Sherbie Hampson holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Flute Performance from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. 

Sherbie has been a dedicated private flute teacher since 1980 and is the owner of the Sherbie Hampson Flute Studio and Sherbie Jared Hampson Music. She has published several instructional books, including “Flutiful Etudes,” “Flutiful Christmas Songs for Beginners,” and “Flutiful Sight-Reading, Vol. 1.” These publications aim to provide inspiring and fresh music for woodwind teachers, students, and performers, helping them advance to new musical and technical levels through engaging works. 

In addition to her role at Carson-Newman, Sherbie has been a Woodwind Instructor at Concord Arts for over 10 years and has taught flute, clarinet, and saxophone at the Westminster Conservatory of Music in New Jersey, Roane State Community College, and Maryville College. Her students have consistently excelled, winning awards in local, state, and national competitions. Mrs. Hampson is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music by the Music Teachers’ National Association (NCTM) and certified by the Tennessee Music Teachers’ Association. She has also undergone extensive Suzuki Teacher training courses. 

With over twenty years of experience performing with the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra, including as Principal Flute, Sherbie has a rich and diverse performing background. She has also served as a flute coach for the Dogwood City National Concert Band Camps and as a substitute flutist for the Garden State Symphonic Band. Sherbie has been featured as a soloist with the Maryville-Alcoa College Community Orchestra and the Knoxville Community Recreation Band. 

Her accolades include being listed in the International Who’s Who in Music and Who’s Who in American Music. She received the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts Outstanding Teacher Award in 2014. 

Sherbie is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Knoxville Music Teachers’ Association (where she served as President from 1991-1993), the Music Teachers’ National Association, the Tennessee Music Teachers’ Association (where she is currently the State Auditions Coordinator for Winds, Vocals, and Chamber Music), the National Flute Association, Sigma Alpha Iota (Lifetime Member), and the East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association.
