In celebration of Carson-Newman’s 175th year, we created the Jesse Baker Fund to honor one of the difference-makers in our history. Carson-Newman’s seventh president, Jesse Baker, is remembered for his proactive leadership during the challenging years following the Civil War, when he allegedly rode more than 3,500 miles on horseback across Appalachia preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and raising funds to settle the daunting debt the school had accumulated. His faithful leadership during a time of crisis helped stabilize Carson-Newman and advance its mission for generations to come.
