PROGRAM OVERVIEW

We are “The People-Centered Sciences.” Prepare for a career in fields like event management, family services, education, and public health.

As a Family and Consumer Sciences major, you’ll focus on the managerial skills needed in the workplace and the home, such as financial management, stress management, resource allocation, organization and time management skills.

Coursework covers a wide range of topics and can be customized depending on your area of interest. The Event Planning and Design emphasis includes classes in multicultural etiquette, project management, event planning, and cooperative management and housing. Students will also complete hands-on event planning through a practicum and internship. The FCS Education emphasis leads to licensure in grades 6-12 and prepares you to teach courses like family studies, food science and nutrition, interior design, personal finance, hospitality and human services. A semester of student teaching gives students a chance to practice classroom leadership skills under the guidance of a licensed teacher.  As an FCS major, the coursework prepares you to enter a career in community extension and eligibility to sit for the Certification in Family and Consumer Sciences exam during the spring of your senior year.
