Celebrated Eagles running back Kenneth Tyson inducted into SAC Hall of Fame

Former Eagles running back Kenneth Tyson receives congratulations from Carson-Newman University President Charles A. Fowler following his induction into the SAC Hall of Fame.

Celebrated Carson-Newman running back Kenneth Tyson was inducted into the South Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame June 2 during the league’s annual hall of fame banquet at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Greenville, South Carolina.

A member of the 2020 Carson-Newman Hall of Fame Class, Tyson is the 16th Carson-Newman Eagle, and the seventh person affiliated with the football program to be inducted into the prestigious body.

Carson-Newman’s second all-time leading rusher, Tyson powered his way to 4,042 yards in his four years (1984-1988). Carson-Newman played for a national title in all four of his years on the roster and won three.

He holds Carson-Newman’s single-season record for rushing yards with 1,867 in his senior year. He is one of two players in school history to find the end zone 50 times in a career.

Tyson is a two-time All-American and two-time Offensive Player of the Year in the South Atlantic Conference.  He had seven 200-yard rushing performances in his career, including four in his senior year alone.

Receiving honors with Tyson were Lenoir-Rhyne women’s basketball player Maya Grady, Tusculum women’s basketball player Jasmine Gunn and former Wingate baseball coach and athletic director Steve Poston.
