(May 7, 2014) — Carson-Newman University continues its focus on global education as it invites six students from South Korea to participate in a joint nursing program that will begin a sister relationship between the University and Gangneung Yeongdong College in South Korea.

Representatives Eui Nam Chung and Jung Sook Seo, both professors at Gangneung Yeongdong, met in April with Carson-Newman University President J. Randall O’Brien and Director of Global Education Dr, Danny Hinson to solidify the partnership.

The partnership is an academic and cultural exchange in areas of education, technology, health sciences and nursing. Six students from South Korea will attend Carson-Newman beginning in June that includes intensive English studies and nursing studies with Carson-Newman’s Nursing Department.

“It is critical as more and more nurses are involved in global health to understand people of other countries and their health care practices,” said Sharon McAnear, Carson-Newman assistant professor of nursing who is facilitating the nursing partnership. “The real benefit of this program is for our students to get to know individual students from another country on a personal level.”

Carson-Newman nursing students will partner with the students from Korea to share about nursing practices in the U.S. and to learn about nursing practices in South Korea. Visiting nursing students will shadow Carson-Newman nursing students and faculty during clinicals in local medical clinics and hospitals.

The program will be the equivalency of one semester and concludes in the fall.
