C-N’s Sigma Delta Pi chapter earns national award for 3rd consecutive year

For the third consecutive year, Carson-Newman University’s Gamma Chi Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi is cited as an “Honor Chapter.” The recognition comes from the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society and recognizes the C-N chapter for “outstanding activities in 2024-2025.”

The award is only presented to 13 chapters nationwide this year.

Because Carson-Newman earned the distinction during the complete 2022-25 triennium, C-N’s Gamma Chi also earned the national Octavio Paz Award. The chapter is led by faculty advisors Drs. Mary Baldridge and Leonor Taiano, who the honor society notes as being “instrumental in earning the awards for their student group.”

Each summer 635 chapters of Sigma Delta Pi nationwide are asked to submit an annual report detailing their activities and projects from the academic year. Based on these reports, the National Executive Committee chooses approximately 10-15 “Honor Chapters” annually. The recognition is based upon the caliber of chapter projects that reflect the Sigma Delta Pi mission of honoring excellence in the study of the Spanish language, contributing to cultural understanding, and upholding the goals of the society.

Founded in 1919 and with its national office at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, Sigma Delta Pi is also a member since 1966 of the Association of College Honor Societies, the nation’s only certifying agency for college and university honor societies.
