C-N to Celebrate U.S. Constitution Monday

Carson-Newman will celebrate the 225th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Thomas Recital Hall, located in Tarr Music Center.

C-N’s history and political science department will sponsor “Will Justice be for Sale in Tennessee?” a presentation by General Sessions Court Judge Ben Strand.

“We are pleased that our students will have the opportunity to hear from Judge Strand as he discusses the potential impact that changing the appellate court structure in Tennessee might have,” said Dr. Kara Stooksbury, associate professor of political science. “He will examine the proposal of using the federal model, which is an option that he believes will not work here.”

A 1962 C-N alumnus who also earned a BA from the University of Tennessee, Strand graduated from Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law in 1967. He has been general session judge in Jefferson County since 1998, following several years of private practice.

Constitution Day has been observed at colleges and universities since 2004, when the late-Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) proposed it as an amendment to the Omnibus Spending Bill. The event celebrates the document that was signed in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787 by 39 delegates to the Constitutional Convention.
