C-N to Celebrate International Education Week

Carson-Newman, along with other institutions across Tennessee, will celebrate International Education Week November 14-18. Activities, planned around a theme of inspiring global success, will include an art exhibit, special chapel service, and Appalachian Center reading.

Proclaimed by both the Tennessee State Senate and Governor Bill Haslam, the week will offer unique educational experiences for all involved, says Melissa Summey, of C-N’s Center for Global Education.

“The international students have volunteered a lot of time and effort to bring this event together,” said Summey, the Center’s special projects coordinator. “The event is going to let you see and better understand the things in our culture that can be very stressful, exciting, and unexpected to international students. We really hope students will be able to see Carson-Newman through a different cultural perspective.”

Carson-Newman’s CGE presently serves 120 citizens from 22 countries, including students, scholars, and family members of both groups.

Many of the Center’s students will be featured through photos they have taken to capture their sense of culture shock and adjustment to life at Carson-Newman. The exhibit, “Culture Shots: Through International Eyes” is a collaborative effort by the Center, the Boyer Lab for Learning, Counseling Services and Women of Vision.

The opening reception for “Culture Shots” is scheduled for 3 until 5 p.m. Thursday, November 17 in the Warren Art Building’s Student Gallery.

There are two other public events. Tuesday afternoon’s “A Sense of Place in Appalachia and the World Reading,” is cosponsored with Appalachian Studies Committee. The ninth annual reading will be held at 4 p.m. in the Appalachian Center. An International Education Week Chapel will be held Thursday, at 9:30 a.m. in the sanctuary of Jefferson City’s First Baptist Church.

A joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education, International Education Week offers campus communities the opportunity to celebrate the benefits of global learning and cultural interaction.
