PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Carson-Newman biology program offers you the personalized experience of a smaller private college along with the advantages of a larger research university. Incorporating high-technology resources for effective STEM programs is expensive and usually favors the larger university. At C-N, though, you’ll find the most up-to-date equipment and practices, guided by faculty who are tops in their field. You really can have it all for your college experience.

Core requirements for the program include general biology, molecular/cell biology, organismal biology and population biology. Then follow your own interests with electives in anatomy, histology, physiology, immunology and more.

Emphasis areas:

  • Environmental Studies
  • General
  • Research
  • Teacher Licensure
  • Health Professions

TAKE THE NEXT STEP

DID YOU KNOW?

Biology majors, much like the rest of the STEM fields, have high capacity for employment, with earnings potential of around $50,000 by national average. One hundred percent of C-N students who graduate with a biology degree with teacher licensure obtain immediate job placements.

LIVING CLASSROOMS

In the C-N biology program, you’ll discover plenty of opportunities to apply your book studies — working with state or federal parks, conducting research in cell-based and molecular biology-based labs, and even hands-on cadaveric study. Additionally, diverse field courses take students to locations like the Gulf of Mexico, Alaska and Costa Rica.

YOU'LL BE READY

HANDS-ON LEARNING

The C-N science facilities are designed for hands-on learning in every aspect. Classrooms are equipped with full multimedia capability to utilize current instructional technologies. Ten laboratories accommodate the distinct applications of different courses. And we even maintain a cadaver lab for human anatomy courses.

Advanced labs are equipped with research-level instruments such as:

  • Bright-field, phase-contrast and fluorescence microscopes, plus inverted microscopes and a laser capture microdissection scope.
  • Centrifuges in most possible configurations including floor-standing preparative and ultracentrifuges.
  • PCR units, a BiaCore Biosensor and flow cytometers.
  • A range of spectrophotometers.
  • Specially configured chromatography systems.
