Stooksbury publishes revised reference book

Dr. Kara Stooksbury

(Oct. 10, 2017) – Dr. Kara Stooksbury’s “Encyclopedia of American Civil Rights and Liberties” has recently been revised and expanded for a second edition. Stooksbury is an associate professor of Political Science and chair of Carson-Newman University’s History, Political Science and Sociology department.

Stooksbury spent the last two years as co-editor of the four-volume encyclopedia to revise and expand the original reference book, which was first published in 2006. The reference book addresses a full range of civil rights and liberties in America from the Colonial Era to the present.

In addition to her work, four Carson-Newman professors and four Carson-Newman students submitted entries for the publication. Stooksbury also had students serve as research assistants, whose help she said “was extremely valuable.” Her co-editors are Dr. John M. Scheb II, professor of political science at the University of Tennessee and Dr. Otis H. Stephens, Jr., professor emeritus of law and political science at the University of Tennessee.

After the landmark Supreme Court case Shelby County vs. Holder, Stooksbury wanted to update the reference book to include the case and other recent developments of civil rights.
