In concert with the U.S. Department of Education’s announcement that summer Pell grants are now available, Carson-Newman staff and faculty began working on ways to help students take advantage of such an opportunity. “The year-round Pell opens the door for qualifying Carson-Newman students to earn an undergraduate degree in three years,” said Dr. Paul Percy, Carson-Newman provost and executive vice president. “By taking advantage of summer courses with Pell grants, families benefit from lower cost for education and, in the process, save time earning a degree.“ The three-year plan includes programs in business, psychology, communications, social sciences, history, and nursing. Aaron Porter, dean of Enrollment Management, points out that by earning a degree in three years, students have the option to enter the workforce sooner, or earn their master’s degree in one additional year. “It’s a message that we look forward to sharing with students and their families considering Carson-Newman,” said Porter. “We especially want to make sure that this is on the radar of students who are high school seniors this year.” The new opportunity will be available beginning fall of 2018. Percy said the offering is another example of how the University’s faculty and staff are constantly working to help accommodate today’s students and place a Christian higher education in even more reach. Last year, the University announced “The Carson-Newman Promise.” That initiative builds upon C-N being a Tennessee Promise school. The plan benefits qualifying Tennessee Promise students who earn their two-year degree and want to pursue a four-year degree at Carson-Newman.
