category: Campus News University to host 18th annual Summer Music Camp category: Campus News | June 11, 2015 (June 11, 2015) — More than 100 area students in grades five through 12 will participate in the Carson-Newman University Department of Music’s 18th annual Summer Music Camp for students June 22-27. Summer Music Camp is one of the many camps and other events Carson-Newman hosts in the summer months including nearly 20 summer day camps, serving more than 8,000 students each year. Music Camp students can participate in several different programs based on their grade, level of experience and other factors all during one weeklong session. Those options include senior band, junior band, musical theatre ensemble (vocal camp), and piano and organ camp. Carson-Newman Director of Bands Pat Bivens says the camp offers much more than simply another summer activity. “Summer Music Camp keeps kids active with their instrument over the summer,” Bivens says. “It’s inspirational too. Everybody needs a breath of fresh air, and this is so much different than playing in their own bands.” Campers hone their music skills throughout the week with ensemble rehearsals, masterclass and sectional rehearsals. Private lessons are also available to campers who want to delve further into the material. Leading music educators from across the state and region will join more than 10 Carson-Newman students and several recent graduates in working with the students throughout the camp. “Most of the kids working this camp are preparing to become band directors, choral directors or music teachers themselves,” Bivens says. “This gives them experience of what it’s like to be in that role.” The camp allows plenty of time for fun with friends as well, through both structured and free recreation time, evening entertainment and social activities. They also get a taste of campus life, staying in Carson-Newman’s residence halls and dining in Stokely Cafeteria. Summer Music Camp ends on a high note with Saturday evening concerts in which all ensembles perform. Concerts are free and open to the public. For more information or to register for Summer Music Camp call 865-471-3496. Deadline is June 21. Space is limited.
