University announces retirement of faculty and staff

(May 5, 2021) JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — More than 150 years of service received recognition as Carson-Newman University honored faculty and staff retirees May 4.

The University recognized the 2021 retirees during a reception in Stokely Memorial Cafeteria.

“We are so thankful for the years of dedicated service these colleagues have given to our students and to our great University,” President Charles A. Fowler said. “They have each left this place better than when they arrived, having worked diligently to improve lives and having helped express our mission in meaningful ways to our students. For that, they have our appreciation and will always have the love of their Eagle family.”

Of the five faculty and staff members who retired this year, Peggy Stroud was the longest serving with 42 years. She retired as production manager for Print & Mail Services, a position she held for more than 18 years. Prior to that time, she served in Admissions.

Stroud first began her service with Carson-Newman immediately following her high school graduation as a summer job. She worked in two part-time positions with Admissions and the Counseling Center before later accepting a full-time role in Admissions.

A lifelong New Market resident, Stroud said she enjoyed the convenience of Carson-Newman’s nearness to home and that the University presented a pleasant environment.

“I don’t think anybody that I ever worked with, I didn’t like,” she said. “It was a good place to work with the atmosphere and being a Christian university. I enjoyed getting to know everybody. There’s a lot of good people there.”

Joining Stroud in retirement are:

• Eddie Carter, assistant athletic director, who served for 39 years,

• Susie Trentham, director of advancement services, who will retire this fall after 31 years,

• Angela Wood, professor of nursing, who served for 27 years, and

• Danny Hinson, professor of teaching English as a second language, who served for 20 years.

Founded in 1851, Carson-Newman is a Christian liberal arts-based university affiliated with the Tennessee Baptist Convention. The University is located in Jefferson City, Tennessee, among the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains and celebrated a record 2,900 students in the fall. Carson-Newman offers 50 undergraduate majors, as well as associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
