Stanley receives 2020 Teaching Excellence Award

(Sept. 9, 2020) JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Carson-Newman University named Dr. Greg Stanley as its 2020 Teaching Excellence and Leadership Award recipient during its Fall Convocation.

Stanley is an assistant professor of physical education and exercise science and is the exercise science program director. He joined Carson-Newman’s faculty in 2015 after receiving his Doctor of Health Education degree from A.T. Still University in Missouri. During his years at C-N, he has overhauled the exercise science program, incorporated nationally accredited certifications, managed students’ 300-hour professional internships, and advised three honors students’ thesis projects. Stanley also serves on several committees, including the Clinical Exercise Physiology Advocacy Committee, and coordinates free weekly, student-taught exercise classes for senior citizens in the Jefferson County community.

Dr. Matt Wilkerson, chair of the University’s Exercise Science Department, was among those who nominated Stanley for the award.

“Greg excels in every facet of his role at Carson-Newman,” Wilkerson wrote. “He is not only the keystone to the academic success shown by the Exercise Science Department, he’s also a noted contributor at the state and national level to the fields of exercise science, athletic training and physical therapy.”

Wilkerson also noted that Stanley is an active member of his church, participating in numerous ministries, and of several community service groups.

“Dr. Stanley is an excellent classroom teacher,” wrote Dr. Christine Dalton, dean of the School of Natural, Applied, and Health Sciences, in her nomination letter. “He works diligently to find the best methodology and technology for his classes and has enhanced the use of technology in all the exercise science and health courses. He also provides opportunities outside of class for his students.”

Presented to non-tenured faculty members since 1990, the University awards this honor to creative and effective professors who foster learning. Considered an indicator of future promise, the honor recognizes exceptional ability and positive student feedback. The awardee receives a plaque and a monetary award, and the recipient’s name is affixed to a permanent Fite Administration Building display.
