Graduates licensed in special education are sought after by schools across the country. And in local area schools, Carson-Newman graduates stand out above the rest. With a special education degree, candidates are prepared to be special education teachers in K–12 schools, and this program offers the opportunity for additional licensure endorsements, such as elementary education. Special education is also an excellent pathway to speech language pathology and occupational therapy. The Special Education licensure programs (all 3 areas listed below) were part of the most recent joint review conducted by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Tennessee Department of Education.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the most important qualities for a special education teacher include: communication skills, critical thinking skills, interpersonal skills, patience and resourcefulness.
Your studies will culminate with a semester of enhanced student teaching. C-N students complete this experience at local area schools in surrounding counties such as: Hamblen, Jefferson, Greene, Cocke, Sevier, Grainger and Knox.
Teacher candidates are prepared to be special education teachers, but this can also be a pathway to Speech Language Pathology and Occupational Therapy.
