Educating youth through the critical years of adolescence, middle school teachers have a one-of-a-kind professional calling. The middle grades education program at Carson-Newman prepares you to be licensed as a grades 6–8 teacher, completing all training to graduate with a Tennessee teaching license. Coursework in the major combines a broad study of liberal arts — including economics, social studies, math and science — with a comprehensive professional education curriculum. The 6-8 Middle Grades licensure programs were part of the most recent joint review conducted by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Tennessee Department of Education.
Whatever your academic and personal interests, there’s a place for you in middle school. As a middle school educator, you can specialize in any of the four core subject areas—science, math, social studies, or English.
Student teachers have completed their semester of full-time teaching in Jefferson County, Hamblen County, Knox County, Sevier County and several other nearby counties.).

You will have an immersive, hands-on experience by participating in practicum experiences at local middle schools. You will work in full collaboration with practicing middle school teachers and have the opportunity to teach and interact with middle school students.
