(March 27, 2018)— Students from Carson-Newman University’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta travelled to Cincinnati, Ohio, March 21-24 to present at the international English honor society convention. Carson-Newman senior, and president of the Sigma Tau Delta chapter, Sarah Spaulding won both the Isabel Spark’s President’s Award and First Prize for Original Poetry. Spaulding, from Johnson City, read her story ‘The Ant Funerals’, which was published in the society’s writing journal ‘The Rectangle’, at the convention’s opening ceremony. She later read in a session from her collection of poems ‘Identity Through New Eyes.” Senior Taylor Mouser, from Russellville, read her essay ‘Resting in Nature and Resisting Culture.’ Her essay was a deconstruction reading of the poetry of Robert Frost. Juniors Teresa Lane, from Morristown, and Gabriel Reed, from New Market, both read from their works at the convention. Lane read from ‘A Poetry Collection: Different Facts of Freedom.’ Reed read two poems at the opening night’s Open Mic and also gave a reading titled ‘Abysses: Poems Inspired by Blaise Pascal’s Life.’ “These wonderful students are the epitome of all that Carson-Newman represents,” says English Department Chair Shawn O’Hare. “They each did a terrific job speaking to large audiences, answering questions about their work, showing how intelligent and composed they are, and in short representing C-N in a way that makes us all proud.” Founded in 1851, Carson-Newman is a Christian liberal arts university located in Jefferson City, Tennessee, among the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. The University has over 2,500 students and offers 50 undergraduate majors, as well as associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees.
