Carson-Newman mourns the passing of Dr. Louis Ball

Carson-Newman mourns the passing of Dr. Louis Ball, who served at C-N for more than 30 years. He passed away on Feb. 28 at the age of 83.

Ball joined the Carson-Newman faculty in 1961. During his tenure, he served as chair of the University’s Music Department for 34 years. He also served as dean of Fine Arts before his retirement in 1996.

Both he and his late wife, Mary Charlotte, shared a deep love for church music and Carson-Newman’s mission. This devotion became the couple’s life-long duet.

In 2000, the two witnessed the endowment of the Louis & Mary Charlotte Ball Institute for Church Music thanks to a trust by their late friends James and Dorothy Penn. Click here to read a story published that same year in Journey magazine announcing the endowment.
