Carson-Newman launches women’s flag football program

Carson-Newman University announced that it will launch a Women’s Flag Football program for fall 2026.

Hunter Sales, director of C-N’s Intercollegiate Recreational Sports, says the new program, which will have scholarships available, reflects the current trends and interests of students.

“Women’s Flag Football aligns perfectly with the Intercollegiate Recreational Sports mission to provide non-traditional avenues for student-athletes to pursue their passions while receiving a Christian education at C-N,” said Sales. “Women’s Flag Football has seen rapid growth at both the high school and college levels in recent years and we’re excited to offer a pathway for these young women to continue competing.”

With newly minted head coach Jessica Cable at the helm, Sales says he’s confident that the program is in good hands. Before graduating from C-N in 2018, Cable played goalie for the Women’s Eagles soccer team.

“Jessica has strong ties to Carson-Newman with a history of athletic success. The understanding of Carson-Newman’s culture and her commitment to success are vital to a start-up program.”

Along with drawing on athletic experience gained at the college level, Cable also previously served as assistant flag football coach at Powell High School.

Sales says by fielding a flag football team, Carson-Newman will join other schools within Tennessee as well as other South Atlantic Conference schools.

With the addition of flag football, C-N’s Intercollegiate Recreational Sports continues togrow in its student offerings, which includes bass fishing, kayak fishing, archery, disc golf, and powerlifting.
