C-N Students Prepare for the Second Annual Celebration of Excellence Day

Senior art major Hannah Williams will be one of some 400 C-N students whose work will be included as part of the second annual Celebration of Excellence: Student Research, Creativity, and Performance Day. C-N will suspend classes so that students, faculty, staff and community members can hear presentations, take in art exhibits and participate in Honors Chapel.

Though summer break is just weeks away, Carson-Newman students are not slowing down. Many are, in fact, gearing up for a campus-wide emphasis of scholarship, imagination and recital.

C-N will suspend classes to dedicate Thursday, April 19 to its second annual Celebration of Excellence: Student Research, Creativity, and Performance Day.

The event began last year when Provost Kina Mallard asked Dr. Laura Wadlington to spearhead a campus research day. The Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Wadlington had 10 years of experience with a similar event that had been sponsored by the psychology department each spring. She was more than willing to volunteer.

“Last year we had tremendous success with it being our first endeavor,” said Wadlington. “We now want to build and grow.”

Growing is exactly what Wadlington, her colleagues and their students are trying to do. Some 200 presentations were made last year; they anticipate that number will double; based on early applications and inquiries received. As of April 1, a variety of posters and presentations were already registered. Organizers expect that every department will be represented in some fashion.

Wadlington thinks the annual event is gaining traction. “Students are using a greater level of creativity to think about different creative projects. I would like to see us develop an even broader view of all the areas within the Liberal Arts curriculum. I would like to see science students appreciate the English projects, foreign language students appreciate the music projects, and for us to have more cross disciplines so we can learn more about all the different areas of the liberal arts.”

The day’s events begin at 9:30 with the Honor’s Convocation at Jefferson City’s First Baptist Church sanctuary. Several sessions will offer posters and oral presentations from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Omega Art Gallery will feature exhibits from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Performances around campus will range from poetry readings to musical offerings between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. From 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., graduate students will present their posters and original research. Activities will close with a 7:30 p.m. concert in Gentry Auditorium by the Woodwind Ensemble and Concert Band.

All events are free and open to the public. Wadlington said she hopes “people are encouraged when they see what wonderful works students at Carson-Newman are doing”.
