Bush Bros.’ Ethier tells C-N graduates “times call for leaders with right values, vision”

Jim Ethier, chairman emeritus of Bush Brothers and Company, delivered Carson-Newman University’s Winter Commencement address to more than 350 C-N graduates.

Carson-Newman University celebrated more than 350 graduates earning degrees during its Winter Commencement. The Dec. 12 ceremony was held at the Sevierville Convention Center.

Jim Ethier, chairman emeritus of Bush Brothers and Company, delivered the keynote address to C-N graduates, who represented 22 different states and 12 countries.

Ethier, the youngest grandson of Carson-Newman alumnus and Bush Brothers and Company founder, A.J. Bush, stressed to those gathered the importance of values and vision. Citing, “integrity,” “responsibility,” “trust,” and “caring in the midst of change” as key values of the family’s company, Ethier told the story of how each played a role in the company’s 117 years of business.

“Whether an institution of higher learning, a corporation, or an individual,” said Ethier, “our times call out for leaders that exhibit the right values and vision.”

At the closing, Carson-Newman University President Charles A. Fowler shared the University’s hope for the graduating class.

“Our hope for you is far grander than anything the world can imagine. We pray for fruitful ministries, meaningful careers, healthy marriages and homes, and for the fullness of the Lord’s blessings for each of you,” he said, but added that the chief ambition is to leave a legacy that is one of faithfulness to Christ.

“Build the life of your mind and the meaning of your life on the person of Jesus and embrace that life and character that He alone can build.”
