A Cappella to present home concert March 17

(March 11, 2016) – Carson-Newman University’s A Cappella Choir will present its annual Spring Tour Home Concert on Thursday, March 17. It’s one of several spring performances the choir is offering in East Tennessee churches.

The 47-voice ensemble is the select touring choir of the University. Members of the choir, chosen by competitive auditions from the student body, include students from seven states and represent 22 academic majors. The group includes just seven seniors.

“I’m so proud of this young choir,” said Dr. Eric Thorson, who has directed A Cappella since 1983. “These students have met each musical challenge set before them and have excelled.”

The tour program features African-American spirituals, contemporary chorus anthems gospel medleys, oratorio selections and Renaissance motets.

Thorson, professor of music, director of Choral Activities and Distinguished Carson-Newman Faculty Member, is well known across the region. He also serves as the Knoxville Choral Society’s conductor and artistic director and is the longtime minister of music at Knoxville’s West Hills Baptist Church.

The Home Concert, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Jefferson City’s First Baptist Church.
