For 175 years, Carson-Newman University has stood as a beacon of faith, learning and service in the heart of East Tennessee. Founded in 1851 as Mossy Creek Missionary Baptist Seminary by visionary Baptist leaders, the institution began with a simple yet powerful mission — to “promote education in general, and among the ministry in particular.” From its earliest days meeting in a local church to the growth of a vibrant campus along Mossy Creek, Carson-Newman has remained rooted in its Christian identity while expanding its academic reach and impact.
Across generations, Carson-Newman has demonstrated resilience and innovation, evolving through name changes, mergers and even the hardships of war to become one of the region’s enduring institutions of higher education. The 1889 unification of Carson College and Newman College made it one of the first coeducational institutions in the South, while its longstanding partnership with the Tennessee Baptist community has helped shape its commitment to both academic excellence and spiritual formation. Today, the university offers dozens of programs and serves thousands of students, continuing a legacy that has endured for nearly two centuries.
As we celebrate our 175th anniversary, we honor not only our rich past but also the generations of students, faculty and alumni who have carried our mission forward. Guided by its enduring motto — Truth, Beauty and Goodness — we continue to prepare servant-leaders who make a difference in their communities and around the world. From humble beginnings to a thriving academic community, our story is one of perseverance, purpose and a steadfast commitment to shaping lives for generations to come.
