Carson-Newman University celebrates winter graduates

Carson-Newman University celebrated some 190 graduates during its Winter Commencement on Thursday, Dec. 7. Families gathered at the Sevierville Convention Center to watch their students receive their degrees.

Gatlinburg’s Ken Jenkins, a natural history photographer and author delivered the University’s commencement address. With over 40 years in the field, shooting in various natural locations across the country, Jenkins connected his experiences and encounters to life’s parallels. “We cannot see around the next bend,” said Jenkins recounting his time in the Smoky Mountains. “There are times that we question if the journey is worth the toll on our mind and body. But in our soul there has been instilled in us a desire to stand on higher ground, to focus on what we were created to be, and to want what God wants for us.”

Jenkins address preceded the conferring of degrees for graduates representing 22 states and several countries.

“My expectation is that you are going to be more effective servant-leaders in your homes, communities, churches, and workplaces because of your experience at Carson-Newman,” said University President Charles A. Fowler, as he spoke to graduates. “My sincerest hope for you is that you recognize that Jesus Christ is Lord, and He had woven into your DNA a reflection of His image and likeness. You have the incredible privilege of reflecting Christ to others.”
