(Sept. 3, 2020) JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — In support of efforts by the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network, Jefferson City Mayor Mitch Cain, Carson-Newman University President Charles A. Fowler and Jefferson County Mayor Mark Potts signed a proclamation on C-N’s campus recognizing September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for adults 25-34 in the state and the third leading cause of death among people ages 15 to 24, according to the Tennessee Department of Health. “I can’t overstate the value in having such good partners in our city and county officials,” said Fowler. “With the serious challenges that many have faced this year, it is so important for us to continue to stand together in bringing attention to a topic that is devastating a generation,” said Fowler. “I’m also grateful to the University’s Counseling Services in helping orchestrate this unified effort.” The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) provides access to trained telephone counselors, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
