Carson-Newman honors students with Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards

(April 6, 2017) – Carson-Newman University honored two students with its highest student award during its April 6 Honors Convocation. Anna Grace Barry and Hogan Scott Brock were each presented the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award before friends, family and the greater campus community.

The New York Southern Society established the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in 1890 to honor an Indiana native and Manhattan attorney who was considered a living example of genteel spirit and Christian compassion. The awards, which are donated by the foundation that bears his name, are granted at 68 colleges and universities to graduating seniors, one female and one male, who “excel in high ideals of living, in fine spiritual qualities, and in generous and unselfish service to others.”

A resident of Maryville, Barry is a human services and Spanish double major, with a minor in religious studies. She is a member of Alpha Kappa
Sociology Honors Society, the Sigma Delta Pi Spanish Honors Society and has made the Dean’s List each semester.

She has been the Bonner Center’s student development intern for the past two years. She planned and organized social justice trainings and service opportunity days and assisted in staff visioning exercises. She has also counseled many of her peers involved in justice work.

Barry served two terms as a member of the National Bonner Advisory Board, and has used Bonner Scholar internships to broaden her perspective on matters of race, gender, poverty, hunger and community development. She has also worked at Appalachian Outreach home repair ministry and served as a Spanish translator for Hispanic families.

Brock is from Armuchee, Georgia. A religion major, he is a Faith & Justice Scholar, Step UP Bystander Intervention Program student leader and resident assistant.

He is a member of Baptist Collegiate Ministries’ Leadership Executive Team, has participated in Operation Inasmuch, volunteered at Appalachian Outreach and participated in the University’s SPOTS mission trips.

Named Resident Assistant of the Year last year, Brock also received Baptist Collegiate Ministries’ “Spirit of Service Award.” He has also served as the youth, college and young adult intern for First Baptist Church, Jefferson City, as well as youth ministry intern at Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church in Georgia.

Brock has been championed by the campus community for his “quiet strength; modeling service, dedication and Christian character.
