category: Campus News Benefit concert to feature pianist Joseph North and “friends” category: Campus News | February 20, 2017 (Feb. 20, 2017) – Carson-Newman University’s Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity will host a benefit concert Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Thomas Recital Hall of the Tarr Music Center on campus. The concert will feature pianist Joseph North along with Carl and Alan Mcguire. The trio will perform jazz arrangements and North will perform his arrangements of hymns. North is a graduate of the University of Tennessee in piano performance and is currently working on his master’s degree in studio jazz piano. From 2005 until 2015, North served as staff accompanist for Carson-Newman University. He currently serves as pianist for First Baptist Concord. Brothers Carl and Alan Maguire were born in Tokyo and raised in Hong Kong. At the age of 15, they moved to Memphis where they learned to improvise sitting in at jazz clubs. At the age of 17, famed jazz pianist Donald Brown discovered them and they began studying under Brown at the University of Tennessee. Proceeds from the concert will go toward the scholarship fund of the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity. Tickets will be available at the door. Adults – $5 and Students – $2. The public is invited to attend. Founded in 1851, Carson-Newman is located in Jefferson City, Tennessee, among the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. The University has over 2,600 students and offers 50 undergraduate majors, as well as associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees.
