April 7-10 to present scholarly and artistic achievements at the Honor Society’s National Convention. Junior linguistics major Theresa Anderson, of Kingston Springs, won a $1,000 scholarship for best paper in Region III for her linguistics project, “If Benjamin Whorf Spoke Spanish: An Application of Bilingualism to Linguistic Relativity.” “Theresa Anderson is one of Carson-Newman’s finest linguistics students,” says Faculty Advisor for the Tennessee Delta chapter of Delta Chi Kip Wheeler. “She has studied Spanish, German, and Mandarin, and she is especially interested in how bilingualism plays out in the human brain. In general, our Linguistics and World Languages programs always produce strong contenders.” Other students who attended were junior art major Samantha Doyle, junior communications major Rachel Lloyd, senior science major Katelyn Madon, junior political science major Tyler Williams and junior religion major Charles Wilt. Alpha Chi is a national coeducational academic honor society. Since 1922 Alpha Chi’s purpose has been to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction. “Our Carson-Newman students always do very well in these national scholarships, and I’m pleased we could take so many to compete this year,” Wheeler says. “The trip gave many students a chance to check out the Capitol for the first time, and to connect with students and professors across the country in their disciplines. Seeing them showcase their academic achievements is always one of the highlights of my spring semester.” Wheeler says plans are already in the works to take more students to the national convention in Louisville next year.
