Smith receives Carson-Newman’s Teaching Excellence and Leadership Award

(August 26, 2015) – Carson-Newman University recognized Dr. Andrew Smith, assistant professor of religion, during its 2015 Fall Convocation. Smith was awarded the University’s Teaching Excellence and Leadership Award.

“[Dr. Smith] has created engaging and creative courses that go beyond the traditional lecture format with flair and humor,” said Dr. Paul Percy, Carson-Newman’s provost. [He] is held in high regard by colleagues, has been described by his department chair as a “creative thinker,” and has been called a “force of nature” by one of his students.”

Given to a non-tenured faculty member since 1990, the honor is presented to creative and effective professors. It is considered an indicator of future promise as well as recognition of ability and student response. Beyond receiving a plaque and a $1,000 check, awardees’ names are added to a permanent display in Fite Administration Building.

Along with teaching, Smith serves as an advisor for a student honor society, has designed multiple new courses, and has been credited for his willingness to assist not only his department, but to also teach courses for another department on campus. He has also been praised for his leadership both on and off campus.

Smith, a Jefferson County resident, is a 2002 Carson-Newman graduate. He continued his education receiving his Master of Divinity degree from Mercer University. He also earned his Master of Arts degree and doctoral degree from Vanderbilt University.
