Carson-Newman students make strong showing at NATS competition

(April 27, 2015)— A Carson-Newman University student took home second-place in the Senior Men’s Division of the Mid-South National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Auditions at the University of Kentucky from April 17-18.

Senior Michael Gonzalez was one of 13 Carson-Newman voice studies students who auditioned.

Ten Carson-Newman students other than Gonzalez reached the semi-final round. They are: Andrew Campbell, Gracie Ellis, Augi Gill, Laura Frahme, Laura Kinney, Emily Morrow, Marissa Myers, Seth Sheffield, Madie Shehan and Fred Wagner.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for students to get feedback and hear other voices outside of our little realm,” Director of Voice Studies Ann Jones said. “The Music Department is very proud of these singers representing Carson-Newman University.

Also performing with Carson-Newman’s group were Cocke County High School senior Rachael Hopkins and Jefferson County High School junior Kaylee Kesterson. Hopkins reached the semi-final round.

The Mid-South NATS Auditions represents universities and colleges of Tennessee and Kentucky. More than 360 singers participated in the auditions.

The mission of NATS is to encourage the highest standards of the vocal art and of ethical principles in the teaching of singing; and to promote vocal education and research at all levels, both for the enrichment of the general public and for the professional advancement of the talented.
