Carson-Newman’s Lyric Theatre presents Into the Woods as part of homecoming

Carson-Newman’s Lyric Theatre will perform “Into the Woods” as part of Homecoming weekend. The Tony Award-winning musical pulls from Brothers Grimm fairy tales, weaving a plot that features such characters as Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and the Witch.

“The fairy tales are wonderfully crafted together with insightful looks at the relationships of parents and children at various stages,” said Director Kyle Biery. “We get a glimpse of the young couple longing for a child, the teenage son that is trying to step outside his mother’s dominance to be a man, men and women that are simply looking for happiness in love, and a young father worried he won’t be able to be the loving father he never had — the same issues that many face each day.” Biery also noted that while the first act of the production is often performed as the “junior version” for children, act two does contain dark moments and that parental discretion is suggested.

Performances will be held in Gentry Auditorium from October 11 – 13 at 7:30 p.m. A 2:00 matinee will close the production on Sunday, October 14. Tickets are $5 for students and seniors, and $10 for adults. They may be purchased at the Gentry Box Office or by phone at 865-471-4163.
