University to honor O’Briens with amphitheatre

Carson-Newman University is launching an initiative to enhance the green space along Mossy Creek in honor of President J. Randall O’Brien and First Lady Kay O’Brien, who are retiring at the end of this year.

The “J. Randall and Kay O’Brien Amphitheatre at Mossy Creek” will feature tiered seating that faces Mossy Creek, designed to complement the natural green space, as well as sidewalk pavers and a stage area for musical, theatrical, academic and community uses.

“Dr. O’Brien has had this on his wish list for six or seven years,” noted Vice President for Advancement Scott Faulkenberry. “In an effort to pay tribute to his years of service, the board has decided to make that vision a reality. We’re hoping the first performance will be Dr. O’Brien with his electric guitar performing with the band ‘GRITS’ for the students.

Construction could begin as early as spring 2019. The fundraising goal totals $500,000. An anonymous donor contributed a lead gift to launch the fundraising effort.
