University to host performance "Great Scott! – a Joplin Centennial Celebration," Sept. 7
(Aug. 30, 2017) – Carson-Newman University will present an evening with celebrated pianist Richard Dowling on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
Dowling will perform "Great Scott! – A Joplin Centennial Celebration." The concert will feature the works of ragtime pianist Scott Joplin including works from the 1973 Academy Award-winning movie "The Sting." Born in 1868, Joplin was hailed as "The King of Ragtime Writers" during his lifetime. Along with other Joplin compositions, the program will also feature an "audience choice" selection where a work will be randomly selected by an audience member from Joplin's piano repertoire.
Dowling is the first pianist to perform all of Scott Joplin's piano works in public. He will perform more than 70 all Joplin recitals in 2017 and 2018. He recently released a definitive 3-CD set of The Complete Piano Works of Scott Joplin through Rivermont Records.
Free and open to the public, the performance will be held in Thomas Recital Hall located in the University's Tarr Music Center.
