Security Officer

Department: Department of Public Safety

Reports To: Patrol Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (hourly)

Time Requirement: This position is for full-time employment. Security operates 24/7, 365 days a year, regardless of holidays. As a officer you may have to work holidays. Security Guards / Officers work 12 hour shifts ( 7a-7p, 7p-7a ). Every 56 days day shift rotates to night shift and night shift rotates to day shift. Duty hours may change with little notice. Security guards/officers may expect frequent overtime to cover department personnel absences due to vacation, sick leave, training, or other reasons as approved by the Patrol Supervisor.

Summary Description: Works under general supervision, is responsible for institutional and related security work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required. Security guards/officers serve as a liaison to local, state, and federal law enforcement officers, emergency management agencies, and University leadership at all levels. This position is armed or unarmed at the discretion of the Patrol Supervisor of Public Safety.

Functional Description:

  2. This is an entry-working class position in the security guard sub-series. Security guards/officers may be assigned to work any shift, providing a full range of institutional and other security activities, such as protecting people and buildings.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Education:  High School Diploma or GED.

Experience: Law Enforcement, Military or prior security work preferred.

Required Skills: Must be able to acquire a Armed Guard Security License, as required by the state of Tennessee.

Must be able to sit, stand and walk or a combination of all three for 12 hours a day. Will need to be able to get in and our of a vehicle several times during a shift.

Security Officer must maintain an authoritative but friendly demeanor when interacting with students, faculty, staff, contractors and visitors. Security is responsible for ensuring every building’s exterior is secure, making reports for our insurance and making sure students, faculty, staff, contractors and visitors feel safe and welcome at Carson-Newman University. This may include unlocking or locking a door, investigating a wreck, confiscating prohibited items, or various other tasks. Security Officers are the only employees here 24/7. therefore you will get request to complete tasks that would not normally be the responsibility of employees within the Department of Public Safety.
