(Nov. 15, 2019) Jefferson City, Tenn. — During Carson-Newman University’s celebration of International Education Week, the Center for Global Education presented former employee Barbara Shoemaker with the Global Ambassador Award. The presentation took place during Thursday morning’s International Celebration chapel service. Dr. Danny Hinson, dean of Global Education, noted Shoemaker spent 18 years in full-time service to the Center for Global Education, followed by more than five years of part-time service, and continued advocacy for building friendships between the community and the University’s international students. “She was an advocate for our international students, a promoter of international education on campus, a participant in the Consortium for Global Education trip to China in the 1990s, a person who often had international students in her home for a meal, a person who encouraged international students to get involved in a local church, and a person who international students turned to when they needed help,” Hinson said. “Despite having been retired more than five years, she remains engaged with the mission of Global Education at Carson-Newman University through relationships with current international students and connections with international C-N alumni around the world.” Other activities during the week included presentations by C-N’s international students during Thursday’s chapel, a Passport Day event at the CGE where Jefferson County officials assisted students in applying for passports, and International Readings at the Appalachian Center.
