Carson-Newman named among “Great Colleges to Work For”

(Sept. 16, 2019) JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Students aren’t the only ones who love being a part of the Carson-Newman University family. According to a recent survey, the University’s faculty and staff are among the happiest with their workplace in the nation.

The Great Colleges to Work For Survey recognizes the colleges that get top ratings from their employees regarding workplace practices and policies. Nearly 240 institutions participated.

Of those Carson-Newman received particular recognition in three categories:
• Teaching environment: faculty members say the institution recognizes innovative and high-quality teaching.
• Supervisor/department chair relationship: Supervisor makes expectations clear and solicits ideas.
• Tenure clarity and process: Requirements for tenure are clear.

“Staff, faculty and administrators should celebrate this recognition of our diligent and thoughtful work,” said Dr. Christine Jones, C-N’s director of Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Planning. “Together we continue to create an environment in which our students experience excellent teaching and a place to thrive.”

Overseen by ModernThink, the survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional questionnaire that captured employment data and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. Employee feedback was the primary factor.

The news comes on the heels of the University announcing a record freshman enrollment (557) and its largest overall enrollment (2,725).

Founded in 1851, Carson-Newman is a Christian liberal arts-based university affiliated with the Tennessee Baptist Convention. The University is located in Jefferson City, Tennessee, among the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains and has over 2,700 students. Carson-Newman offers 50 undergraduate majors, as well as associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
