category: Campus News Alpha Chi students win scholarships and prizes at national convention in Louisville category: Campus News | April 19, 2017 (April 19, 2017)— Students from Carson-Newman University’s Tennessee Delta chapter of Alpha Chi travelled to Louisville, Kentucky, April 6-8 to present scholarly and artistic achievements at the Honor Society’s National Convention. Junior English and psychology major Sarah Spaulding won a $1,000 scholarship for best paper in Region III for her Shakespearean essay, “Powering Petruchio: Building a Case for Personality Disorder in The Taming of the Shrew.” In addition, Spaulding won a $100 prize for best presentation in British Literature for the same essay. Music major Chris Justice won a $100 prize for best performance in the Performing Arts category for his clarinet recital of “Concert No. 3, Movement 1: Allegro Moderator by Carl Stamitz.” Other students who attended were English major Taylor Greene, religion missions major Muriel Kimbrough, psychology major Bethany Lemons, religion major Harrison Litzell, art and business major Rebecca Nichols, and physics and interior design major Aaron Waldrupe. Alpha Chi is a national coeducational academic honor society. Since 1922 Alpha Chi’s purpose has been to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction. “These students are a credit to our institution,” said Dr. Kip Wheeler, faculty advisor for the Tennessee Delta chapter of Delta Chi. “Our local Tennessee Delta chapter as a whole has been recognized with ‘Star Chapter’ status again, mostly as a result of the fine work of students like these.“ Founded in 1851, Carson-Newman is located in Jefferson City, Tennessee, among the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. The University has over 2,600 students and offers 50 undergraduate majors, as well as associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees.
