(Nov. 22, 2016) – Carson-Newman University has been named to the 2015 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. The announcement comes from The Corporation for National and Community Service. It is the fifth straight year the University has been named to the list. Carson-Newman was named to the Honor Roll’s “With Distinction” category, the highest honor a college or university can receive outside of being a national finalist at the presidential level. In 2012, Carson-Newman was recognized with the Presidential Award, which is presented to the nation’s top institution for community service. Carson-Newman provides students with service opportunities that include projects through the University’s Bonner Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement, Appalachian Outreach home repair ministry, and international medical mission trips for nursing students. Inspired by the thousands of college students who traveled across the country to support relief efforts along the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community challenges. The Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency for volunteering and service, has administered the award since 2006 in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the American Council on Education, Campus Compact, and the Interfaith Youth Core.
