Carson-Newman’s Hartman sees work included in national art publication

Heather Hartman

(Sept. 28, 2016) – Carson-Newman University adjunct art instructor Heather Hartman of Knoxville has been included in the prestigious publication “New American Paintings, Juried Exhibitions in Print.”

It has been a professional goal to be recognized in New American Paintings since I was a student in college,” recalls Hartman, whose work appears in the June/July 2016, South, Issue #124. “I remember looking through the issues, and finding inspiration in the quantity and quality of work being made by contemporary painters who were living all over the country, not just in the expected places like New York or Los Angles.”

Hartman says the experience has been one she’s been happy to share with her students. “As an educator working with future artists, I am happy that I can report back to my students that with hard work and perseverance, you can still accomplish your goals to be recognized as a professional artist despite the current economy, and lack of funding for art.”

Julie Rabun, Carson-Newman’s Art Department chair, says she couldn’t be more pleased with her fellow artist. “We are very fortunate to have Heather as a colleague,” said Rabun. “The Art Department values her outstanding teaching, numerous professional accomplishments and exhibition record as a practicing artist.

New American Paintings describes itself as “a juried exhibition-in-print.” Each museum-quality issue results from a highly selective juried competition and presents the work of forty painters. Thousands of artists enter the publications competitions every year, but only a limited number make it through the jurying process. The publications works closely with renowned curators in order to select artists whose work deserves to be seen by a wider audience.
