The event is sponsored by the University’s Appalachian Cultural Center. Free and open to the public, A Sense of Place will feature members of Carson-Newman’s international student community. Students will share poetry and readings in their native languages and discuss the time as current residents in Appalachia. The event offers a unique blend of cultures of Appalachia, Portugal, Korea, Saudi Arabia, China, Germany, Japan and others. “Last year was the first time that I attended this event, and I was overwhelmed by it,” said Dr. Regina Sullivan, Carson-Newman’s new dean of Global Education. “It bridges cultural divides by focusing on what we all share: love and appreciation of our homes. It is a wonderful opportunity for the entire community to experience the beauty and diversity of our Carson-Newman international students.” Carson-Newman has a thriving international community of some 120 students representing 30 countries. The 4 p.m. event will be held at the Appalachian Cultural Center located on Russell Avenue on Carson-Newman’s campus.
