category: Campus News Our Katrina Volunteers: Looking back 10 years category: Campus News | August 26, 2015 Members of Carson-Newman’s Katrina Volunteers in 2005. (August 26, 2015) – Ten years ago, a team of some 170 Carson-Newman volunteers loaded up and headed south to Mississippi, seeking to help residents of Hattiesburg, Biloxi and Bay St. Louis in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. It was hard work, more than 5,000 man-hours in 85-degree heat. It was long days. It was clearing brush and downed trees, roof repair, wall and ceiling removal, and ministering to those who had lost everything. And it was Fall Break. Volunteers composed of students, faculty and staff, carried out Carson-Newman’s mission and the Greatest Commandment of “Love” to those who needed it most.
