(May 7, 2015) – Carson-Newman University recently dedicated a new campus fixture on the grounds of Henderson Lawn. During an April 25 ceremony, the University’s Young Women of Promise unveiled a permanent swing as a gift to Carson-Newman and its students.

Young Women of Promise (YWOP) is a campus organization that provides female students unique opportunities to enhance campus, involve others and hone personal skills that will serve them all of their lives. The group is a student auxiliary of the University’s Women of Vision organization.

Inspired by a similar swing located in downtown Knoxville, members of YWOP established a goal to build a permanent swing on campus. Thanks to Johnson & Galyon CEO Doug Kennedy, the project itself was conducted by the Knoxville construction firm, which donated all labor and discounted material. To ensure consistency in structural design, the swing incorporates the same style of brick as the University’s Henderson Humanities Building. YOWP raised money for the structure through various fundraising events.

“Carson-Newman students will have a nice swing to enjoy for generations to come,” said Callie Wells, graduating senior, and outgoing YWOP president. “I am just thankful that Young Women of Promise was a part of making this happen.

In addition to fundraising efforts, the group received support from Linda and George Sample of Greeneville, as well as Mary and Russ Brandes of St. Petersburg, Florida.
