Mortar Board to hold “Trading Places: President—Student Swap Day”

(March 28, 2014)– On Thursday, April 3, Carson-Newman University’s Mortar Board chapter will sponsor a “Trading Places: President-Student Swap Day,” offering a unique opportunity for one lucky student. The event will allow one student to become the University’s president for the day, complete with meetings, hectic schedules, and key decision making.

In return, Carson-Newman President Randall O’Brien will revisit his college days, attending class, hitting the books, performing duties as a work-study student, and hanging out with other students in a residence hall.

“This is going to be fun, but also eye-opening,” said University President Randall O’Brien. “I am looking forward to relaxing a bit with sneakers and a hoodie, but I am also excited to get a taste of the daily challenge students face juggling classes, clubs, sports, possibly part time jobs, and friendships. Today’s students take on a lot, and I am excited to get a better understanding of our students.”

In order to qualify for the presidential role, student-candidates will encourage the campus community to donate change in attempt to fill large jars. The student raising the most money will hold the title of Carson-Newman’s president for the day, laying claim to the University’s corner office.

Funds raised will go toward funding a BOOST Your Speed 5K on April 5. BOOST, which stands for “Bonner Out-of-School Time,” is an after school program overseen by the University’s Bonner Center and the Jefferson City Housing Authority benefiting children of Jefferson County.

Mortar Board is the premier national honor society recognizing college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since its founding in 1918, the Society has grown from four to over 220 chartered collegiate chapters with more than a quarter-million members across the nation.
