Carson-Newman University to present annual Oratorio

Carson-Newman Music Department Oratorio

(Nov. 13, 2013) — Carson-Newman University and Morristown East High School will team with members of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra to present this year’s annual Music Department Oratorio on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

“For many, this will begin their holiday season,” said Dr. Eric Thorson, director of several of Carson-Newman’s vocal groups and the oratorio’s conductor.

The evening begins at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Jefferson City’s First Baptist Church and will feature Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria” and selections from the Christmas portion of Handel’s “Messiah.”

“Last year we performed the ‘Messiah’ and invited area church choirs to participate,” Thorson said. “The sanctuary was so overflowing with people, we thought we would have to turn people away.”

Members of C-N’s A Cappella Choir, Women’s Singers, and Men’s Chorus will join with the Morristown East High School Advanced Choir and members of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Carson-Newman instrumentalists.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information please contact Carson-Newman’s Music Department at (865) 471-3328.
