As the culmination of course work and field experiences, every student in teacher education completes one semester of full-time student teaching, completed during the last semester of the student's college curriculum. Students complete two placements in local school systems (within a 30-35 mile radius of Carson-Newman) during the semester, and their placements are selected based on their licensure areas, prior practicum experiences, and the need for experience in culturally diverse settings. Cooperating teachers, who are selected based on the licensure area of the assigned student teacher and their own successful teaching experience, provide supervision on a day-to-day basis. Student teachers are also supervised by a college coordinator who serves as the link between the campus community and the P-12 community.
