Admission to the Teacher Education Program

The Teacher Education Program is part of an Education Department that is one of the best recognized and most highly respected academic programs in the state of Tennessee. All of the undergraduate education programs at Carson-Newman University are accredited on the state, regional, and national level.

Admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP)

In addition to being admitted to Carson-Newman University, students who wish to be recommended for licensure to teach must be formally admitted to the Teacher Education Program. The following are the admission requirements.

  • Complete the Application for Admission to Teacher Education Form.
  • Complete 40 semester hours of college work, 12 of which must be at Carson-Newman University.
  • Provide evidence of a 2.75 grade point average, both overall and at Carson-Newman University.
  • Obtain passing scores on PRAXIS I (PPST), all three sections OR present evidence of an ACT composite score of 22 or above OR present evidence of a combined verbal and math score on the SAT of 1020 (ACT and SAT must be completed prior to admission at Carson-Newman University).
  • Obtain two recommendations from Carson-Newman University full-time faculty members (one must be from education full-time faculty; one from full-time faculty in major area of study).
  • Submit a student information sheet prior to being interviewed for admission.
  • Complete a successful interview for admission (see below).
  • Complete the following courses with a grade of C or better: English 101-201; COMM 125/135/230; Education 101 OR 121; Education 303; Special Education majors must also have a C in COMM 230.

The Interview Process
