What does being in Community Connections (Comm Conn) look like?
Comm. Conn. Scholars work 8 in-office hours a week, in addition to attending weekly Comm. Conn. meetings and taking an hour to practice self-care and/or serve at a community partner of their choosing.
Everyone works as part of the team to plan and host monthly events.
Events may be awareness raising or service-based. Sometimes they are a combination of both!
Everyone is expected to work together and contribute--this includes sharing ideas for future events, ways to improve, leading meetings, and coming up with team builders!
Community Connections Annual Events:
An annual day of service that allows Carson-Newman students, faculty, staff, and alumni to service throughout the region on service projects that include cleaning, cutting firewood, and beautifying parks and schools. Carson-Newman partners with area non-profits, schools, and churches to allow students to experience the benefits of giving back through service. Operation Inasmuch is held in the fall semester and gets its name from Mathew 25:40 where Jesus says, "Inasmuch as you serve the least of these, you serve me.”
Remember, you can be the difference you want to see in this world.
MLK Jr. Day of Service
Carson-Newman students serve on this day in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. MLK Jr. Day of Service is a national event to raise awareness of the importance of serving your community and neighbors. The Saturday after MLK Jr. Day each January, volunteers from Carson-Newman focus on two to four projects in the community and come together to serve.
In addition to service, service-learning, and professional development opportunities, Scholars will receive minimum scholarship aid of at least $1,000 per academic year, renewable for up to three years.
Community Connections also works with area non-profits to connect students with service opportunities in the community. If you are interested in finding a place to serve, contact Community Connections by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
